Proanthocyanidins, a group of flavonoid compounds in hawthorn berries are credited with much of the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions. The total phenolic, flavonoid, and oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) fractions of hawthorn have 15-lipoxygenase inhibitory effects.
Various mechanisms for regulated cell death include the formation of oxidative mediators such as lipid peroxides and nitric oxide (NO). In this respect, 15-lipoxygenase-1 (15-LOX-1) is a key enzyme that catalyzes the formation of lipid peroxides. In multiple studies posted in various journals it’s been found that 15-lipoxygenase inhibition is related to a reduction of lipid peroxidation.
