Dr. Rick Strassman

Dr. Rick Strassman is a psychiatrist, clinical researcher, and author whose pioneering work on the psychedelic compound N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) helped revive scientific interest in psychedelic research after decades of limited academic investigation.

Biography

Dr. Rick Strassman

Through his groundbreaking clinical studies at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine during the 1990s, Strassman conducted the first government-approved human research with psychedelic compounds in the United States since the early 1970s, making significant contributions to the scientific exploration of altered states of consciousness and their implications for psychology, neuroscience, and spirituality.

Board-certified in psychiatry, Strassman received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completed his residency at the University of California, Davis. His landmark clinical trials investigated the physiological and psychological effects of DMT in carefully controlled laboratory settings, documenting participants' reports of profound visionary experiences, encounters with seemingly autonomous intelligences, altered perceptions of time and space, and states frequently described as mystical or transcendent. These studies became the foundation for a renewed era of scientific inquiry into psychedelics and consciousness.

Strassman is best known as the author of the influential book DMT: The Spirit Molecule, which brought his research to an international audience and inspired widespread discussion about the relationship between psychedelics, neuroscience, religion, and the nature of consciousness. He has also authored DMT and the Soul of Prophecy, Inner Paths to Outer Space (with Slawek Wojtowicz, Luis Eduardo Luna, and Ede Frecska), and My Altered States, works that explore the intersections of psychedelic science, biblical prophecy, Jewish mysticism, contemplative practice, and philosophy of mind.

Throughout his career, Strassman has examined how extraordinary states of consciousness relate to religious experience, mystical traditions, near-death experiences, and theories of human cognition. His later work increasingly engages with Hebrew Bible scholarship and Jewish mystical thought, proposing thoughtful frameworks for understanding visionary experiences while maintaining a commitment to careful scientific and historical inquiry. Rather than reducing such experiences solely to neurochemistry or accepting them uncritically as metaphysical realities, he encourages an interdisciplinary dialogue between neuroscience, psychiatry, theology, and philosophy.

Widely respected for his balanced and intellectually rigorous approach, Dr. Rick Strassman continues to be one of the most influential figures in contemporary consciousness research. His work has profoundly shaped modern discussions surrounding psychedelics, spirituality, and the enduring mystery of human consciousness.
